Inert Bed Support Media for Catalyst and Adsorbent Beds

Inert Bed Support Media for Catalyst and Adsorbent Beds

Inert bed support media are hard, unreactive balls installed in graded layers below a working bed of catalyst or adsorbent, and often above it. The bottom layers carry the weight of the bed and keep working media out of the outlet collector; a top hold-down layer keeps the charge steady against incoming flow.

The balls do no adsorbing and no catalyzing. Their job is mechanical: support the load and stay inert under process conditions. Interra Global supplies catalyst bed support media and adsorbent bed support in two material families, silica-alumina ceramic and alumina. Four products cover the range, from routine dehydration beds to steam reforming service.

How to Choose Catalyst Bed Support Media

Selection starts with the service. Catalyst and adsorbent beds running at or below 325°C (617°F), which covers molecular sieve dehydration and the bulk of adsorption units, sit inside the envelope of ceramic support balls like cSPHERE A25. That makes A25 the default for most beds Interra supplies.

Chemistry narrows it from there. In ammonia and synthesis gas plants, steam and hot condensate leach silica out of standard media and carry it downstream onto the catalyst. Alumina support balls like PROX-SVERS T-46 are built to resist exactly that. Where purity requirements are strictest, as in steam reforming, high purity alumina balls like PROX-SVERS T-99 take silica out of the picture at 99%+ alumina.

Typically Replaced at Change-out

Support media typically comes out with the sieve: when an adsorbent bed reaches change-out, the support layers beneath it are usually removed and replaced along with the fresh charge, though some plants screen and reuse balls in good condition. Interra supplies mSORB® molecular sieve and inert bed support media together, so both can be specified and sourced from one supplier.
