Molecular Sieves are amazing zeolite materials composed of precise and uniform structure and size which allows it to be used to preferentially adsorb gases and liquids based on molecular size.
Molecules that are larger than the size of the molecular sieve are not adsorbed while molecules smaller than the cage structure are adsorbed. For example during ethanol production distillation of ethanol can only achieve the level of 96% ethanol and 4% water. In order to break apart this azeotrope a molecular sieve is used to adsorb the water while the larger molecule of ethanol is excluded, resulting in fuel grade ethanol.
The size of the pores of the Type A and Type X Molecular Sieves are closely controlled during the manufacturing process. Sodium, Calcium, and Potassium are exchanged ions that regulate the size of the pore opening which allows for the precise adsorption of molecules based on size. Try to imagine a parking garage, the height of you vehicle is 7' however the roof of the garage is only 6'8". As hard as you may try, you are not going to get your vehicle into the garage. The same principal applies to different size molecules which will or will not fit into the molecular sieves based on their size. This precision allows scientists and engineers to design systems that can adsorb and hence separate on a molecular level.
